Organic Sugar Scrubs VS. Chemical-Based Skin Care

Looking for a little summer reading? If you like scary stories, check out the list of ingredients on your skin care products! If you are a fan of the organic sugar scrubs here at Sweet Melissa’s sugar scrub store, you may be one of the people who are already concerned about all the chemicals in skincare products, makeup, shampoo and other products.

While we may be preaching to the choir, as they say, we still think it’s worth talking about why you should question what is in the skincare products you bring home – from face and body sugar scrubs to makeup and sunscreen.

Why should you be concerned?

Your skin is the largest organ in your body. Ingredients in the products you use to care for all that skin – including dangerous chemicals – can be absorbed through your skin and build up in your system.

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), “Every day, the average woman uses about a dozen products containing more than 150 different ingredients. Many cosmetic chemicals are designed to penetrate the skin completely, and they do. Consequently, some common cosmetic ingredients turn up in the body. Among them: industrial plasticizers called phthalates, a common fragrance component; parabens, which are preservatives; and persistent fragrance components like musk xylene.”

What can you do?

Not every chemical ingredient is unhealthy, but unless you have a degree in chemistry, it’s not easy to tell which ones are which. There are some resources online that can help you make good choices the next time you go to the store, including:

  • The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a project of Breast Cancer Prevention Partners offers a searchable database of Chemicals of Concern.

The Organic Option

An increasing number of people are paying more attention to the food they put in their bodies, to be sure they are free of chemicals and dangerous additives. But how many people pay attention to the things they put on their bodies?

If you’re among the growing number of people who are asking important questions about the safety of the chemicals used to make everything from moisturizers to hair coloring and lipstick, we applaud you. Maybe that’s what sparked your interest in our natural exfoliating sugar scrubs.

Whatever first brought you to Sweet Melissa’s Organic Sugar Scrubs, we hope you’ll keep coming back because of our personalized service and our selection of exfoliating sugar scrubs made with natural essential oils – like the Cherry Seed Oil we use on our Cherry on Top Hand & Body Sugar Scrub, which is rich in Vitamins A & E.
